Two things to talk about today: writing romance, and romance in real life.
First, writing romance. I bought You Can Write a Romance by Rita Clay Estrada & Rita Gallagher today. Reading the first chapter I learned a few very useful tips. First, I need to come up with a theme for my book. Well, duh, I guess.
But that's what ya get when an academic tries to turn Romance-writer diva. I'm not quite sure what I want my theme to be. An example given in the chapter is that a woman who has loved and lost can love again. Is "polar opposites can overcome incredible odds and find love" a good enough theme? My gut tells me it's a little weak. I'll keep thinking about it.
I also discovered that my instinct to outline where I want my novel to go (just like I was so anal-retentive about when writing essays for undergrad and graduate school
) was dead-on. I was methodical when writing essays, and so too will I be when crafting Romance stories. muwhahahahahahahahaaa!
Estrada and Gallagher write: "Stay in the middle of the road and write mainstream stories until you sell." Hmm... Does that mean I need to toss my garden gnome idea out the window? Gut instinct: maybe. I'll keep working on roadmapping (good debate term
) my plot and see where the story goes.
Lastly regarding writing romance stories, the first chapter gives some great introductory advice on character development. I'm really glad I bought the book. So if you're also interested in writing romance novels, go check out You Can Write a Romance.
Second topic: romance in real life. My birthday was Saturday and the studly David's choice of presents was totally sweet. I went over to David's and he met me as I walked in the door. With a wicked gleam in his eyes and both hands behind his back, he told me to "pick one." I said, "Left." He moved his left hand into view and he was holding the most precious of Passion roses in his hand. I of course squealed and got all girly. Avoiding the thorns, I kissed him, smelled the rose and squealed some more. Eventually he asked "Do you want to see what's in the other hand?" Yeah, duh!
He pulled out his right hand and he was holding a simple newspaper article. But, oh, I already knew what it was: Shakespeare in the Park!! He packed a picnic of my favorite foods and had everything all ready to go. We arrived way early, but that was for the best. We were able to sit out blanket near the front, and had books and magazines to keep us busy until the show began. The show was William Shakespeare's The Tempest. I gotta say, this is my new favorite Shakespeare play. If you've never seen it or read it, I suggest you do so! It's a delightful, fantastic little gem.

My birthday was super romantic.
Having a romantic, super studly Marine for a boyfriend is possibly one of the greatest blessings an aspiring romance novelist can enjoy.
Take care, y'all & God Bless
