Feeling bold and daring, I emailed my resume straight to two VPs of companies here in St. Louis.  Here's what I wrote in the emails:

I understand you are a busy man, and I appreciate you taking the time to read this email.  If you have any positions available, I would love to set up an interview with you.  Please contact me via email or phone.

All of the "(insert info here)" do-dads are there to indicate that I put real info there.  I haven't received word form either.  *Ugh, sigh.*  I thought 'if I'm bold and daring, maybe I'll catch their attention.'  Uh huh.  Well, that worked out really well. 

Guess I'd better whip out Plan B.

It can take a lot of time for any kind of response, even if it's positive. But next time you do this, put a bit more about why you want to work for that company in a way that shows that you know what that company does, and in a way that shows what you can do for that company. It would just take one or two well chosen sentences that would make your cover letter look individual and less like a form letter. If you can't think of a reason why you want to work for that company in particular, just invent one!

I agree with you the way you view the issue. I remember Jack London once said everything positive has a negative side; everything negative has positive side. It is also interesting to see different viewpoints & learn useful things in the discussion.
