- Right now I'm feeling determined
- Gee, I wouldn't mind finding a job in a local company's government relations dept. making at least $50,000 plus benefits.
Any takers?
It's 8:34am; got up at 7am after three hours of sleep. Peaches
is already over at Kennelwood, psyched for a day of romping with the other pups at 'Doggie DayCamp'. Unbeknownst to her, she's in for a day at the spa, as well.
I'm in for another grueling day of looking for a job. I hate to complain, but it really is so difficult. The field I want to break into holds relatively few new slots, and as I understand the slots that are out there are held by the same people who have been around forever. Kudos to my friend Monica, who has recently broken in.
We had lunch the other day at the Elephant Bar and we chatted about the whole 'job search' process.
Of everyone around me right now, I think she understands best of all what I'm going through. Okay, so, yeah, everyone of course understands that it's not always easy to get a job — but does everyone know what it's like for peeps with degrees in Political Science? Bachelors' of Political Science are a dime a dozen here in St. Louis; that's one of the reasons why I went ahead and got my Masters degree. I thought that might set me apart and help me get a better job a little easier.
Heehee...yeah, tough luck.
No magical doors have opened up yet for me. It's all about who you know here in St. Louis. Fortune 500 companies don't exactly advertise: Wanted: LOBBYIST! You have to talk to everybody and see if they know of any openings in the Government Relations/Government Affairs/Public Affairs/Constituent Relations/Corporate Relations (the list of what different companies call the department that deals with legislative issues goes on and on) of a particular company.
So I have a Masters degree. That's great. Will it help me get a job any easier? Maybe...time will only tell. The real question is: will I be able to land a job making at least $50,000 plus benefits. I am certainly worth a lot more than that, but the problem is finding a company that needs my particular expertise.
Another problem: I not only have to start making payments in August for the loan that I took out for grad school, but also owe a local hospital $14,000 for my 5-day visit back around Christmas time. Needless to mention, the hostipal doesn't care that I'm not made of gold. Mais bon, c'est la vie. Businesses expect to be paid for services rendered; I just wish it wasn't me who had to pay right now.
Well, gotta get back to the 'hunt.' Ciao, friends!
1 Hello.
